Biofeedback is a technique in which people are trained to improve their health by learning to control certain internal bodily processes that normally occur involuntarily. These bodily processes can be measured with electrodes and the readings displayed on a computer monitor that both the participant and his or her practitioner can see. By watching an instrument giving continuous measurements of bodily functions, a client can experiment with different thoughts, feelings, breathing rates, stretches, and postures to improve their health.

Most people who benefit from biofeedback have conditions that are brought on or made worse by stress. It is important for the participant to examine their day to day life and learn what may be contributing to their disorder or distress. Biofeedback training is most effective when a commitment is made to consistently practice biofeedback and/or relaxation exercises at home.
